Safety-instruction sign looking south at Locust Road in Eastham, September, 2001. This was once the northern end of the Rail Trail. As of 2001, the pavement was narrower south of this point and had deteriorated considerably, but it has been redone more recently. Signs were still posted in 2001 indicating that Massachusetts Bike Route 1 turned east onto Locust Road and ended on Salt Pond Road, a bizarre misdirection. Bike Route 1 actually goes all the way to Provincetown -- but before the Rail Trail was extended, Bike Route 1 did not pass through here. Instead, it used roads west of Route 6, and then Route 6 for a short stretch between Massasoit Road and Lecount Hollow Road.
